The project
MásUno | Event Discovery & Community Platform
MásUno is an event discovery and community engagement platform designed to connect people through shared interests, local activities, and real-world experiences. The platform allows users to discover events, connect with like-minded individuals, organize activities, manage participation, and build trust within the community through a reputation-based system.
As a Full-Stack Developer, I worked on the development of the platform using Next.js, React, Node.js, and MongoDB, contributing to the implementation of event discovery, location-based search, user participation workflows, backend APIs, and data management.
The Challenge
Building an event discovery platform requires more than displaying a list of available activities. The application must connect users with relevant events based on their location, interests, and availability while providing organizers with the tools to manage their activities effectively.
One of the primary challenges was implementing an efficient location-based discovery system capable of identifying nearby events and presenting them in a relevant order.
The platform also needed to manage relationships between event organizers and participants, maintain accurate attendance information, support event requests, and handle different participation states.
Another important consideration was creating a reliable community environment where users could confidently discover and attend activities with people they may not have met before.
Event Discovery & Location-Based Search
One of the core features I worked on was the event discovery system, which enables users to find activities and experiences relevant to their location.
I implemented geospatial search functionality using MongoDB GeoJSON and geospatial aggregation queries, including $geoNear, to retrieve events based on geographic proximity.
The backend processes location coordinates and search parameters to return relevant results, allowing the frontend to display nearby activities without requiring users to manually browse through unrelated listings.
This functionality provides the foundation for a location-aware discovery experience that can support events across different cities and geographic regions.
Event Creation & Management
MásUno allows users to organize their own events and connect with participants who share similar interests.
I worked on event-related data structures and backend functionality supporting the creation, retrieval, and management of activities.
Events contain information such as descriptions, locations, scheduling details, organizer information, and participation data.
The application connects this information with dynamic frontend interfaces, making it easier for users to discover events and for organizers to manage their activities.
User Participation & Request Management
A major part of the platform involves managing interactions between event organizers and potential participants.
I worked on participation-related functionality, including joined-user relationships, event requests, and the associated backend data operations.
These features required handling multiple states of user participation while maintaining consistency between event records and user accounts.
MongoDB aggregation pipelines were used to retrieve and combine related information efficiently, enabling the application to present relevant participation data without requiring excessive individual database requests.
The resulting workflows help organizers understand who is interested in their events and allow participants to manage their involvement.
Digital Tickets & QR-Based Entry
MásUno incorporates digital event tickets to simplify the process of attending activities.
The platform's ticketing experience uses QR codes to provide participants with a convenient way to access events, reducing reliance on traditional printed tickets or manual entry processes.
This functionality forms part of the broader event lifecycle, connecting event discovery and participation with the actual attendance experience.
Community Reputation & Karma System
One of the platform's distinctive features is its community reputation system, built around karma points.
Users can build their reputation through event participation and organization, helping other community members assess reliability and engagement.
This creates an additional layer of trust within a platform where users frequently interact with new people.
The reputation system also encourages meaningful participation and provides a foundation for community-driven engagement.
Backend APIs & Database Architecture
I worked extensively with Node.js, MongoDB, and Mongoose to implement and maintain the backend functionality supporting the platform.
This included developing RESTful APIs, handling database operations, implementing business logic, and managing relationships between users, events, requests, and participation records.
A key technical aspect involved using MongoDB aggregation pipelines to retrieve interconnected data efficiently.
By combining geospatial queries, document relationships, and aggregation stages, the backend could return structured information suitable for direct consumption by the frontend.
This approach helped simplify data retrieval and support increasingly complex application requirements.
User Accounts & Data Relationships
The platform relies on interconnected user and event data to support its community-focused functionality.
I worked with database structures that associate users with the events they organize, join, or request to attend.
Managing these relationships required careful handling of identifiers, participation records, and query conditions to ensure that the application returned accurate information.
The backend was structured to support reusable data operations and consistent API responses across different parts of the application.
Responsive User Experience
The application was developed with a focus on accessibility and usability across different screen sizes.
I worked on responsive React interfaces that present event information, participation controls, and account-related functionality in a clear and organized way.
Special attention was given to dynamic content rendering, reusable components, and integration with backend APIs.
The goal was to provide a smooth experience for users discovering activities while maintaining straightforward workflows for organizers managing their events.
Performance & Query Optimization
Location-based applications frequently need to process large amounts of dynamic data, particularly when retrieving events, participant information, and geographic search results.
I worked on optimizing database queries and backend data retrieval to reduce unnecessary operations and improve API efficiency.
MongoDB aggregation pipelines and geospatial indexes provided a foundation for more efficient location-based searches and related-data retrieval.
These considerations were important for keeping the platform responsive as event listings and participation records increased.
The Result
MásUno provides a connected environment where users can discover local activities, organize events, manage participation, and build relationships through shared experiences.
Its combination of location-based event discovery, participation management, digital ticketing, and community reputation creates an experience that extends beyond traditional event listing websites.
My contributions focused on the full-stack functionality supporting event discovery, geospatial search, participation relationships, database aggregation, and backend integrations.
The project strengthened my experience building location-aware applications, working with complex MongoDB queries, managing interconnected data models, and implementing scalable backend functionality for community-driven platforms.
MásUno demonstrates my ability to develop full-stack applications that combine geospatial functionality, complex data relationships, event management, and user-focused experiences into a cohesive digital product.
